Jason Lee

Software engineer: full-stack, backend, and mobile

I’m a Computer Science sophomore at the University of Rochester who ships real products: a study platform I co-founded and still run, a notarized macOS app, a Chrome extension with 70 users, and apps on the App Store. I’ve interned as a software engineer at Axionum and Experts Tribe, and I recently joined the BEAR Lab as an undergraduate researcher in human-computer interaction.

Projects

Full-stack platform Co-founder Mar 2023 – Present

Flozable

A social study platform with a web app, a React Native app, and a real-time backend. I co-founded it in 2023, wrote most of the original backend, rewrote it alone in TypeScript, and rebuilt the product in 2026 with one collaborator. It had 160+ registered users by July 2025.

  • Wrote most of the original Node backend in a small team, then rewrote it alone as a ~10K-line TypeScript API with 19 Prisma models, Redis, Socket.IO, and WebRTC rooms on mediasoup, deployed on AWS EC2 with Ubuntu, Nginx, and PM2.
  • Built per-timezone leaderboards on Redis sorted sets, snapshotted to MySQL by an hourly cron as each timezone reaches midnight.
  • Co-built a 2026 rebuild on Next.js and Supabase, writing the Postgres functions that lock the timer row so two devices can’t save the same session twice.

Chrome extension Solo Sep 2026 – Oct 2026

Flozable Focus

A Manifest V3 extension with 70 users on the Chrome Web Store. It gathers deadlines from Canvas, Blackboard, and Gradescope into one dashboard and blocks distracting sites during a Flozable focus session.

  • Reads coursework from a student’s own signed-in session, and aborts imports if the account changes or pagination links leave the school’s origin.
  • Keeps focus sessions and reminders correct across service-worker restarts using persisted state, alarms, and an account-scoped reminder ledger.
  • Blocks sites with overlays that preserve the exact URL, and releases them on disconnect or revoked permissions.

macOS app Solo Apr 2026 – Jul 2026

WaveNotch

A free native macOS utility that turns the MacBook notch into an expandable dashboard for media controls, live lyrics, and 17 optional modules.

  • Wrote a media engine that controls Spotify, Apple Music, Safari, Chrome, Brave, and Edge using distributed notifications and AppleScript-injected JavaScript.
  • Built a lyrics pipeline that queries four providers in parallel, scores matches, discards stale results, and syncs LRC lines to playback.
  • Shipped 26 release builds through v2.15 with scripted signing and notarization and Sparkle delta updates.

iOS app Solo Aug 2026

Reparked

An iOS app that chooses parking by the whole trip, ranking nearby options by drive time, walking time, and community-reported prices.

  • Merges SFMTA open data with MapKit results, removes duplicates by distance and name overlap, and labels every result’s data source.
  • Built an actor-based directions layer with a 3-request concurrency cap, in-flight deduplication, exponential backoff, a 30-minute cache, and a straight-line fallback.
  • Keeps raw price reports private with insert-only row-level security and a median-price RPC, with 26 passing XCTest cases.

iOS app Co-developed Aug 2026

Clash of Screentime

Head-to-head screen-time challenges for friends, built with one collaborator. Lower usage wins, and the loser’s sealed selfie goes only to the winner.

  • Wrote the Edge Function and Postgres ledger behind scoring: append-only events, row-locked writes, server-side timestamp validation, and range-count queries.
  • Built most of the monitor extension and screen-time service, which persist usage callbacks to App Group storage and sync them under a short execution window.
  • Penalty selfies stay sealed until a confirmed result. Ties never reveal, and only the winner gets a short-lived signed URL.

Undergraduate Researcher

BEAR Lab, University of Rochester

I’m an undergraduate researcher in Prof. Yukang Yan’s BEAR Lab (Behavioral Enhancement and Adaptive Reality) through CSC 395 Independent Research (3 credits), in human-computer interaction and mixed reality. The lab studies how to understand, predict, and enhance user behavior in mixed reality. I joined in October 2026, so I’ll add specifics here as the work develops.
